English abstract:
Traditional buildings that have been adapted to the prevailing climate entail an accumulation of design knowledge concerning specific bio-climatic performance features, such as thermal comfort due to building techniques, choice of materials or spatial organisation. Accessing this repository of empirical information could support environmental, social and economical sustainability. Deeper understanding of various aspects of traditional buildings is essential to perpetuate the inherently concrete as well as intangible aspects of their cultural heritage.

This work deals with building features of traditional architecture in the Islamic Mediterranean region, and especially with the hammam as a traditional building, which has been in decline in the past two hundret years. Furthermore this work comprises a thermal analysis of the hammam building, as well as the influence of the outdoor climate on internal conditions, have been detected and described in a quantitative way. Thermal comfort conditions in various parts of the building have been studied and quantified.

It has been proven that the indoor climate of the building is highly dependant on the outdoor climate. Furthermore the indoor temperatures are strongly influenced by the use pattern. The thermal comfort analysis by means of psychometric charts demonstrates that thermal comfort is nearly always ensured in the active part of the building. Only the tepidarium can be slightly chilly in the colder season. In the passive part of the building, the frigidarium, the conditions vary most and do not always fit in the predefined comfort zones.
