English abstract:
This paper describes instances of the application of building performance simulation
throughout the building delivery process. Specifically, we illustrate how the use of
computational performance simulation tools can be extended beyond the design phase, to
address applications in building retrofit and building operation. Toward this end, we
demonstrate how simulation models of existing buildings may be calibrated through the use
of empirical (measurement) data. Use cases of such calibrated simulation models for decision
making support in the building retrofit realm include examples of historical buildings (in a
number of Mediterranean countries) as well as residential and commercial buildings (in
Africa). Use cases for model-based energy-efficient and user-responsive building operation
include examples for lighting, shading, and ventilation controls (as implemented in Austria).
