Kurzfassung englisch:
Integration of software tools, which are often commercial off-the-shelf (COTS-)products, to facilitate an integrated
workflow for end users, is a relatively young topic in the broad domain of application integration. It faces many of
the problems encountered in enterprise integration, like isolated and incompatible data formats and communication
protocols, but also poses special challenges such as limited external interfaces, a mostly closed-source thirdparty
application landscape, and the lack of integration-standards and frameworks. Applying successful integration
solutions from the enterprise to the problem of tool integration on the desktop allows for building reusable
and extensible integration solutions that are easily adaptable to new tools and workflows. One of the few tool
integration solutions currently available is ToolNet, a custom, service-oriented integration framework developed
by EADS Germany that connects engineering tools using custom Adapters and a proprietary messaging backbone.
This work examines the current situation and demonstrates how emerging and open integration standards such
as Java Business Integration (JBI) can be applied to build a standards based modern integration framework. The
findings are demonstrated with a prototype that illustrates a redesign of ToolNet.
