Kurzfassung englisch:
After the 1st World Tribology Congress 1997 held in London at which the state of the art was reviewed and progress in the field of Tribology was consolidated at a world level, the 2nd World Tribology Congress in Vienna concentrates on the achievements in the field of Tribology by the year 2001 and the future advancement of this discipline in the 21st century. WTC2001 has scheduled about 800 presentations and offers many opportunities of communication and information, bringing together experts from all over the world, tribologists and users of the technology to exchange knowledge and experience.
Selected presentations - plenary papers as well as session key papers - focus on main aspects of tribology, such as:

Ø Friction and wear of metal, ceramic, and polymers
Ø Tribosystem analysis, contact mechanics
Ø Material and surface engineering
Ø Lubricants, lubrication and rheology
Ø Surface science aspects of tribology
Ø Tribology needs of industry and transportation
Ø Special tribosystems

The papers presented in this volume show the state of the art in the concerned fields of tribology and shall not only inform colleagues, tribology students and researchers of related sciences about recent research works, it should also give hints to the engineers and practitioners in order to obtain a satisfactory friction level and to minimize wear in everyday's tribosystems .
