English abstract:
Wear testing of total hip arthroplasties is performed in many tribology laboratories throughout the world using widely diverging test methods. Since the outcome of wear tests depend on a enormous variety of known and unknown parameters, the ISO technical committee TC 150 Implants for Surgery decided to develop of a new standardised wear testing protocol derived from gait analysis to fix at least some crucial aspects of wear testing like displacement, load and orientation of the specimen. The article describes the kinetic principles of gait analysis, its mathematical description and the application in a newly developed wear testing machine, E-Sim hip simulator that complies with the proposed ISO/FDIS 14242 standard.
