Kurzfassung englisch:
Steam electric power plants incorporate system components whose operation is a safety critical task. These tasks enforce the employment of safety certified control computers. On the other hand the desire for optimized plant control and the complex structure of the overall plant control system suggests the use of decentralized process control equipment. This paper discusses the integration of a safety critical PLC into a decentralized process control system based on interconnected industrial personal computers. Such an approach requires special care to ensure error confinement to non safety critical parts of the system. However, the fulfillment of this prerequisite has to be accompanied by adequate coupling between safety and non-safety critical parts of the system to allow for data communication needed for the optimized control of the plant.
