Hydro-generators have a physical life time of about half a century. For this reason, the refurbishment of large hydro-generators is a growing market. When old components are combined with new parts, modern design guidelines collide with old ones. Thus, the design process for the refurbishment of large hydro-generators requires special detailed investigations. The utilization of high efficient numerical field calculation methods as well as analytical methods allows for accurate predictions of the electrical behaviour and the fulfilment of contractual requirements of such refurbished synchronous machines.
