"Introduction to H-Matrices and Applications in Micromagnetics";
Talk: Humboldt Universität Berlin, Berlin (invited); 05-10-2004 - 05-13-2004.

English abstract:
H-matrices have recently been introduced for the efficient numerical
treatment of fully populated matrices which arise, e.g., in the
numerical treatment of integral equations.

In our talk, we first give a short introduction to H-matrices
- including uniform H-matrices and H^2-matrices - and discuss
complexity of related algorithms, e.g. LU decomposition and
matrix-vector-multiplication, and storage requirements. For
assembling an H-matrix approximation of the Galerkin stiffness matrix
of an integral equation, we use interpolation of the integral kernel
in the so-called far field.

Second, we present some analytical results from a joint work with
Nikola Popovic on the applicability of H-matrix techniques for the
numerical computation of the stray-field in micromagnetics.

Numerical experiments conclude the talk.
