H-Matrices became a very efficient tool for the treatment of dense
matrices which arrise in the discretization of integral equations.
This lecture notes give a very brief introduction into H- and H^2-
matrices which arrise by simple interpolation of the integral kernel.
We prove estimates on the complexity of storage/assembly as well as of the matrix-vector multiplication. A discussion of the approximation error and the first Strang lemma concludes the notes.
