Abstract

57Fe Mössbauer investigations are reported for K0.3Ba0.7Fe2S3 and compared with the unsubstituted compound BaFe2S3 in the temperature interval 4.2 < T < 293 K. According to the temperature dependence of the quadrupole splitting and the value of the centre shift (CS) both samples can be characterised as mixed valence compounds. A weakening in stiffness of the Fe sublattice follows from the decrease in Debye temperature (30 K), if Ba is substituted by K. The ordering temperature, determined from the appearance of a magnetic hyperfine split component, is roughly 40 K lower than the one for BaFe2S3 indicating a strong influence of the interspersed cations on the magnetic exchange interaction.
