Kurzfassung englisch:
Using ab initio band-structure calculations and employing the disordered local moment formalism we study the 4fmoment induced magnetic splitting of the valence band in pure hcp Gd metal at zero and critical temperature Tc. We find that the local exchange splitting of the valence band persists above Tc, which is in strong disagreement with the conventional Stoner picture. Our results favor the strong coupling scenario of the interaction between the localized and itinerant part of the Gd electronic system. Our analysis provides a theoretical background for the discussion of recent photoemission experiments.
