Kurzfassung englisch:
Direct current (DC) discharges are well known and understood today. However, there is less known about DC glow discharges at high pressures. High pressure glow discharges are interesting because expensive and maintenance-intensive vacuum equipment is not required. This fact allows minituarization of discharges for various applications. Main goal of this study is to investigate similarity ("scaling") laws for high pressure DC discharges. Therefore we constructed a high pressure chamber to observe glow discharges in a pressure range from 0.1 to 1.5 bar with inter-electrode gaps between 0.1 mm and 5 mm. Distances are adjusted with a micrometer-head. Both electrodes are water cooled to allow measurements at higher power ratings. The electrodes are replaceable to permit experiments with various electrode materials. Current voltage (I-V) characterization and pressure measurements are accessible parameters. Optical analyses can be done with microscopes and spectrometers. First measurements with helium showed a good reproducibility. We observed stationary striations at pressures around 1 bar. First results will be presented.
