Kurzfassung englisch:
About 20 years ago, the development of surface analyticaltechniques was mainly driven by the need for multinationalcompanies and large government research institutions tocharacterize surface structure on a continuously decreasingscale. Around that time, it was felt that organizing a conferencein this field would meet the increasing need forscientific exchange. This resulted in the first ECASIA conferencein Veldhoven (near Eindhoven) in the Netherlandsin 1985. In the meantime, surface analysis techniques havehad an impact on the daily lives of large sections of oursociety, not only on scientists in industry and academic orgovernmental researchers, but also on the broad public whohas become aware of the field through the media in the formof popular TV shows like the X-files, CSI and others. For theexperts, this has given rise to many memorable scenes likethe unforgettable analysis of the micro-identification-chipcut out of Rutger Hauer´s neck in the science fiction classic`Blade-Runner´, which was scrutinized under the electronmicroscope into which the sample was introduced in a plasticbag!Twenty years after the first ECASIA, the 11th ECASIAconference was held from September 25th to 30th at theVienna University of Technology in Austria. The scientifictopics included: metals, oxides, polymers, magnetic materials, biomaterials, thin films and coatings, catalytic materials,micro- and optoelectronics, nanomaterials, solid-liquid interfaces, surface modification and functionalization, corrosion, adhesion, tribology, environmental analysis, heritage conservation, quantification, data interpretation, imaging, depthprofiling, simulation and software for surface investigations, technique development and standardization. The scientificprogramme featured 19 invited speakers, and a total of 457predeadline contributions, about a quarter of which werepresented orally, while the remaining contributions weremade public during poster sessions or the software demonstrationsession.Wolfgang WernerChairman of the ECASIA05
