We have used x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and resonant inverse photoemission at the CeM5(3d5/2-->4f) edge, to study the Ce 4f states in the isostructural metallic compounds CeCo9Si4 and CeNi9Si4. The spectroscopic data reveal the intermediate-valence nature of these materials. They also suggest that a larger density of states at the Fermi level, and a reduced 4f energy, are the origin of an enhanced 4f-conduction band hybridization in the Co compound. This provides an explanation for the remarkable differences in the magnetic, transport, and thermodynamic properties of the two materials.
