Abstract:
Ternary RE2Pd2In compounds with RE = rare earth exhibit various types of magnetic order and crystalline electric field splitting plays a crucial role determining the ground state of a particular rare earth element in such compounds. Kondo interaction was found as principal mechanism in Ce2Pd2In and magnetic order occurs with substantially reduced magnetic moments. The type of order, however, depends critically on slight changes in stoichiometry. On the contrary, long range magnetic order is absent in isomorphous Yb2Pd2In, which can be considered as the hole-analogue of Ce2Pd2In. A preliminary study on isostructural Yb2Pd2Sn evidences a nonmagnetic ground state as well, at least down to 100 mK. The aim of the present work is to show that long range magnetic order is established on an In/Sn substitution, but constrained to a narrow region of concentrations rich in Sn. This observation implies that Yb2Pd2(In,Sn) may possess two quantum critical points (QCP) and non-Fermi-liquid features should be evident around each QCP. We also discuss a scenario to find for the first time two quantum critical points in a single material. (Work supported by the Austrian FWF, P18054).
