Core-shell nanoparticles are classified according to their chem. compn. as inorg.-inorg. nanoparticles, inorg.-org. nanoparticles, org.-org. nanoparticles, org.-inorg. nanoparticles, and inorg.-biomol. Core-shell architectures are the result of either a two-step approach, consisting of prepn. of nanoparticles and then modification of their surface, or an in-situ approach during particle formation. An overview of the synthetic procedures and some selected properties of core-shell nanoparticles is presented.
