Photolysis of 6-azido-2,3-dihydrobenzo[b]thiophene (I) in an excess of Et2NH gave 2,3-dihydro-8H-thieno[2,3-d]azepine II. The structure of II was confirmed by 1H NMR spectroscopy and by conversion to 8H-thieno[2,3-d]azepine III via successive bromination and dehydrobromination. The irradn. of 6-azido-1,2,3,4-tetrahydronaphthalene (IV) in THF contg. Et2N or morpholine gave mixts. of azepines V (R = NEt2 or morpholino) and VI (R1 = NEt2 or morpholino). VI were the major isomers.
