English abstract:
Germanium is one of the elements of the periodic table whose speciation has not been studied extensively so far, despite of its technological relevance. The present review tries to shed some light on particular aspects of the chemistry, production, use, and particularly the biological and environmental effects of important germanium species. It discusses especially the difficulty of performing speciation analysis of this element, and proposes analytical schemes that are applicable for the qualitative and quantitative analysis of germanium and its organic compounds.

Keywords:
speciation, environmental analysis, sample preparation, germanium
