English abstract:
This talk starts with a short demo of the Lixto Web extraction tool. With this commercial tool a user can visually specify and annotate relevant information to be extracted from Web pages. While the user works on example Web pages, the program translates the user actions into a logic program, more precisely, a datalog program, whose rules describe the patterns to be extracted. The program (aka wrapper) can then be applied to similary structured Web pages for extracting the appropriate patterns and translating them into XML. In the second part of the talk, some theoretical issues on Lixto will be presented. We will show that Lixto expresses monadic second order logic over trees (i.e., parsing trees of Web pages). Moreover, we will discuss some challenges for nonmonotonic reasoning related to information extraction.
