Kurzfassung englisch:
Starting from a generic circuit model we analyze the auxiliaries that different design styles, namely synchronous logic, the bounded delay approach and the delay insensitive approach, employ to attain flow control. From this analysis some fundamental properties can be derived for each of these approaches. We classify several typical design methods with respect to these generic design styles and compare them with respect to area overhead, power consumption and speed. This shall allow a hardware designer to better understand the involved tradeoffs and shall serve him as a guideline to select the proper design technique for a given problem.
