Kurzfassung englisch:
Every treatment system has to cope with load variations. It is well-known from activated sludge systems, that the variability of nitrification rates is limited. Also for biofilter systems,
the variation of the nitrogen load as well as the variation of the organic load has to be taken into consideration. Pilot plants were used to determine the actual nitrification capacity under operating conditions. The flexibility of the nitrification reactor is defined as
the ratio between the maximum and the average nitrification rate. It was found out that - besides the well studied influence of filter velocity, aeration rate and temperature - the flexibility of the nitrification rate is limited to about 2, and the heterotrophic activity reduces the flexibility. If the load exceeds the maximum nitrification capacity, elevated effluent concentrations of NH4-N and NO2-N occur.
