On the Bending Problem at the Terminals of the Protecting pipe of a Double-Pipe Section of a Pipeline. The present paper is concerned with the bending problem at the two terminals of the protecting (external) pipe of the double-pipe section of the pipeline Genoa-Ingolstadt int he neighbourhood of Bregenz, Vorarlberg, Austria. The length of the double-pipe section is 1.8 km. The pipeline runs along the shore of Lake Constance. Stringent requirements concerning protection of the environment were the reason for surrounding the main (internal) pipe by the external pipe. The methods of analysis, available at the time of construction of the pipeline, approximately twenty years ago, did not permit consideration of the influence of stiffening ribs at the terminals of the double-pipe section. The ultimate consequence was the requirement of a significant reduction of pressure before the beginning of the double-pipe section. Because of the necessity of an equally significant increase of pressure after the end of the double-pipe section, high energy costs arise. Using the Finite Element Method, it is shown that the required safety for the operating case as well as the catastrophe case ("leaking main pipe") will be exceeded even if fully desisting from a reduction of pressure.
