Kurzfassung englisch:
The developed coupled boundary element (BE) - finite element (FE) method is a so-called FE-type of coupling technique. After a brief review of the most important mathematical relations of the mentioned incremental.iterative hybrid technique, some remarks on the mechanical inconsistency of symmetrizing the resulting coupling stiffness matrix will be made.

The presented numerical investigation is devoted to the three-dimensional elasto-plastic stress analysis of a drifting between the two tubes of the stretch U3/14 of Vienna's underground line U3, in the area of a station of this line. It will be demonstrated that coupled BE-FE stress analysis is a highly powerful method for the solution of complex geotechnical problems, which likely could not be solved as efficiently either by the BEM or by the FEM.
