Kurzfassung englisch:
In this paper the role of finite element methods (FEM) in academic engineering education is described. "Learning by doing" is considered to be an important principle for effective teachung of finite element methods. Decentralized computing facilities with easy access to powerful hardware and software by the students are a prerequisite for establishing this principle. A complex geotechnical problem, involving fundamental as well as practice-oriented research, serves as an example for "learning by doing" at the authors' academic institution.
