English abstract:
These two Proceedings contain both the invited and contributed papers presented at SCI-C 1990, the Second International Conference on Computer Aided Analysis and Design of Concrete Structures, held in Zell am See, Austria, from 4th to 6th April 1990. This conference was the second in a series, following a highly successful first conference held in Split, Yugoslavia, in September 1984, which attracted more than 220 participants.

The analysis capabilities and the degree of constituive modelling sophistication currently available exceed the actual applicability of these methods to real structures. The attention of most researchers is still primarly on constitutive and algorithmic aspects, whereas the task of designing a concrete structure remains a significantly less researched area.

The primary aim of the conference was to discuss the extent to which currently available computer aided techniques could and should be applied to real concrete structures. Two special sessions were devoted entirely to two apparently distant issues - one to the recent developments in constitutive modelling formulations and associated computational intricacies (strain localisation, softening, damage, non local models), and the other to the relevance of sophisticated nonlinear analyses to structural engineering practice.

The papers in part I and II have been organised in teh sections

Part I - 1. Beams, Frames; 2. Panels, Prestressed Concrete; 3. Plates and Shells; 4. Bridges; 5. Automated Design; 6. Large Structures

Part II - 7. Long Term Effects, Temperature; 8. Constitutive Aspects; 9. Dynamic and Cyclic Response; 10. Overview Papers

We sincerely hope that the conference and these proceedings help identify the proper balance between the justified complexities of constitutive modelling and computer algorithms on one hand, and the reilable, high quality design of concrete structures on the other.

Lust, but not least, the editors would like to thank the members of the Technical Advisory Panel for their support and in particular the authors for their cooperation in the efforts towards the success of SCI-C 1990.
