Contrary to the conventional proof of stability of compression flanges of I-beams according to the Austrian Standard Ö-Norm B4600, Part 4, the interactio of the individual lamellae of the flange at buckling is considered in this paper. A feature of the obtained symmetrical und unsymmetrical eigenforms, respectively, is the partial contact between the lamellae welded to the web and the neighboring lamellae welded to the former along the longitudinal edges. At first, the stability problem, which is coupled with a contact problem, is solved for the elastic domain, using the Rayleigh-Ritz method for the determination of the symmetrical eigenforms and a finite-strip method to determine the unsymmetrical eigenforms. Then, the stability problem is solved for the domain of elasto-plastic material, employing three different consitutive models. The essential results, relevant to the design of steel structures, are summarized in a single graph.
