English abstract:
The SILVIA project aims at providing decision-makers with a tool allowing them to rationally plan traffic noise control measures. Low-noise road surfaces can achieve substantial reductions in street traffic noise. In order to take full advantage of the low-noise surfaces, the integration of the surfaces with other noise abatement measures must be explored. The other noise abatement measures being examined include the combination of pavement surface and tyre design, assessment of other vehicle noise sources, influence of local conditions (urban vs. rural, crossings, etc.), traffic management measures and noise barriers. The effects of each of these measures when combined with low-noise surfaces are being studied. This effort will result in a "European Guidance Manual on the Utilisation of Low-Noise Road Surfaces" to help decision-makers to rationally plan noise control measures.
