"Performance-based binder tests with Austrian polymer-modified binders";

Under an extensive test programme, 17 different elastomer-modified bitumens commonly used in Austria as well as two non-modified standard bitumen products were tested using both conventional methods and performance-based methods conforming to SUPERPAVE. As an initial step, the relevant upper and lower temperature limits to be used as a basis in determining bitumen performance grades in different climatic
conditions were reviewed and a performance grade map compiled for Austria. All bitumen specimens were tested both in the unaged state and after RTFOT and PAV aging to identify the change in properties resulting from the aging process. In addition to the SUPERPAVE tests, conventional binder tests were performed on binders at all three aging stages. All modified bitumen specimens were analysed with regard to polymer content and homogeneity. Based on the test results, the conventional evaluation methods were compared against the performance-based procedures with regard to their validity in determining performance characteristics such as rutting resistance (PG upper limit versus Ring+Ball Softening Point) and low-temperature performance (PG lower limit versus Fraas Breaking Point). It was found that, as a matter of principle, the SUPERPAVE methodology is also applicable to the polymer-modified binders tested, even though rutting resistance of polymer-modified binders tends to be underestimated and the time-temperature superposition principle applied in predicting lowtemperature performance does not have universal validity. It is therefore recommended to supplement Bending Beam Rheometer data by measurements obtained from Direct Tension Tests. The comparison of conventional against performance-based assessment criteria revealed a very high correlation with regard to the evaluation of deformation behaviour but only modest agreement where the assessment of low-temperature performance was concerned. Additional comparative measurements demonstrated moreover a satisfactory reproducibility of the SUPERPAVE test results.
