English abstract:
Egerton University is facing water shortage making sustainable use of water a necessity in implementing reuse strategies for wastewater. This study was conducted between May and August 2005. The study focuses on ascertaining the water quantity and quality at different sites of the supply and distribution line in Egerton University, Njoro campus.
Investigation of the amount of water to different users was done to establish the major water consumers. Water quality was also measured before and after use to establish the less contaminated wastewater that could be reused in areas that do not require high quality water. To achieve this, assessment of the water quantity at Egerton University was conducted at different supply units of water use at the campus. Water meters were fixed and reading was done daily to assess the quantity. Samples were collected at an interval of two weeks for quality determination of P (PO4-P and Total phosphorus), N (NO2-N, NO3, NH4-N and TN), DO, TSS, BOD, and COD. Waste water flow to the stabilization ponds was measured at frequent intervals to determine the amount entering the system. Also efficiency of these ponds was determined in terms of TSS, BOD and COD removal and compared with the existing waste discharge guidelines.
From the study, it was found out that the major water consumers are the domestic users for washing (clothes, dishes and cars), cleaning, flushing toilets, bathing and garden watering. As the campus expands more and more water will be required by different users. The water used for irrigation can be saved for other uses by reusing the wastewater after passing through secondary treatment.
This study therefore recommends a preliminary water management plan to reduce demand for water which is as important as developing new sources of supply.
