English abstract:
Cable-stayed bridges, which are constructed by the cantilever method, are vulnerable when the structure is long but has not yet been joined together. In combination with the utilized lightweight design wind gusts and heavy wind may lead to undesired horizontal vibrations with large amplitudes and subsequently to structural failure. Tuned Liquid Column Dampers (TLCD) are proposed to amplify the effective structural damping and thus allow for larger cantilever lengths. Experimental investigations on a small-scale bridge model set-up equipped with a TLCD conducted in the laboratory for structural dynamics of the Institute for Building Construction and Technology at the Vienna University of Technology confirm the beneficial results of comparative numerical predictions.
