English abstract:
Wastewater generated by the viscose production process is generally characterised by a high concentration of sulphate and zinc and medium strength of carbonaceous organic matter. During anaerobic treatment sulphate reducing bacteria compete with methanogenic
bacteria for the available organic substrate. Furthermore, hydrogen sulphide produced by sulphate reduction precipitates zinc as zinc sulphide. Excess hydrogen sulphide can be removed physically/chemically or biologically either in the gas or in the liquid stream in a post treatment step. Anaerobic wastewater treatment allows therefore an advantageous combination of COD, sulphate and zinc removal. However, high concentrations of H2S in the
anaerobic reactor inhibit the activity of anaerobic micro-organisms and can cause process failure. Long term lab-scale and bench-scale experiments were conducted to investigate the feasibility of anaerobic treatment of wastewater from a viscose manufacture. Investigations permitted to gain fundamental information about process stability, applicable COD loading, H2S toxicity threshold concentration and competition between sulphate reducing and methanogenic bacteria, leading to the optimization of the operational process conditions for large-scale implementation.
