"Enhanced treatment of combined sewer overflow with secondary clarifiers";

Kurzfassung englisch:
A new process of enhanced treatment of combined sewer overflow with secondary clarifiers is introduced. This process makes use of the fact that the capacity of secondary clarifiers is normally limited by the sludge load and not by the hydraulic load. The combined sewer overflow is fed into the feed-channel of the secondary clarifiers and undergoes partial treatment. The sludge loading of the clarifiers is not affected by this wastewater flow.

Data from laboratory experiments, pilot testing as well as full scale application confirm that there is a remarkable removal effect on COD and total suspended solids. A full scale plant with strict effluent standards has successfully been operated with this process, as is indicated by the operating data. About 25% flow increase without deterioration of the effluent values have been achieved. However, the limits of the process have not yet been met in the full scale application.
