English abstract:
Since a decade increased interest of the asphalt pavement industry in the development of low viscous asphalt mixtures also referred to as low temperature asphalt mixtures has been noticed. Thereby, important advantages are announced if compared to conventional pavement construction techniques. In particular, a distinct viscosity reduction at high temperatures is declared. This shall enable mixing, transporting and paving at significant lower temperatures. The temperature reduction will also lead to a decrease in energy consumption and in (CO2-) emissions. In this paper, common techniques for the production of low viscous asphalts are briefly reviewed. Then, first results from a comprehensive laboratory test program are presented, focusing on performance-based testing of bitumen and asphalt mixtures that have been modified by use of Fischer-Tropsch-paraffin (FT-paraffin) in order to get low temperature asphalt mixtures. The test results clearly indicate, that the use of FT-paraffin modified bitumen will result in a significant increase in rutting resistance, on the one hand, and will enable paving at lower temperatures due to a significant reduction of bitumen viscosity, on the other hand. Contrary to these advantages, a worsening of the low temperature characteristics has been identified in BBR and TSRST measurements.
