The system discussed in this paper applies artificial evolution methods in architectural floor plan design. Design variants are treated as copies of an evolving species. The properties that are subject to evolution pertain to the form as well as the function of the rooms accommodated. Since function in architecture is an open concept that not only includes physical comfort but aesthetic aspects as well, the system is not intended to make the evolution of designs automatic. Rather, it invites the user to intervene interactively into the process as displayed on the screen.
