This study investigates the impact of innovation on productivity and production growth in the
European Union. The question gained considerably in importance, since growth differences
became larger in the nineties, and the USA are again forging ahead in productivity growth after
decades of narrowing the gap between Europe an the USA. The question arises whether and to
which extent innovation can explain the growth differences in general, and differences between
Europe and the USA.
