English abstract:
The two routes to Design by Analysis, laid out in two normative annexes of the standard, are discussed. Emphasis is on the new Direct Route, which is characterised by non-linear models, diverse design checks related to individual failure modes, and various load cases within each design check. Background information and references to applications are given. The Direct Route to DBA has proven to be a major step forward in design, giving designers much insight into a structure's behavior and into the safety margins against individual failure modes. Possible improvements in the design, to more economical and more rational designs, and in in-service inspection procedures and intervals can be deduced directly.
