Kurzfassung englisch:
Optimal Tool selection is a crucial task in the efficient employment of numerically controlled machines that is increasing in complexity and difficulty. We describe a constraint-based approach for the intelligent design of toolsets for work piece manufacturing on NC machines. Initial part designs can be produced and imported from a commercial CAD system. The toolset designer incorporates tool data from manufacturer catalogs, enhances the features with manufacturing information, and selects an optimal toolset that minimizes cost, refit cost, or number of tools as desired. The core of the implementation is an optimizing constraint algorithm that can be formally expressed in terms of Generative Constraints, a successful configuration formalism.
