Kurzfassung englisch:
Passenger cars and light duty vehicles equipped with modern direct-injection diesel engines are characterized by excellent comfort, outstanding driving performance and extremely low exhaust emission levels, owing to the significant improvements achieved in the last years in fuel injection, air management and combustion systems. Nevertheless, considering the increased customer's sensitivity to urban air quality and in order to meet the future emission legislation, effective aftertreatment technologies can be needed to further decrease the vehicles environmental impact.
A system based on a for-life catalyzed diesel particulate filter has been developed for serial passenger cars, in order to drastically reduce the particulate emissions in all vehicle driving conditions. A complete characterization of the effectiveness of this system, in term of particulate mass, number and size distribution is presented in this paper. Measurements have been carried out with both the conventional Gravimetric method and the Transient Differential Mobility Particle Spectrometer (TrDMPS) technique, capable to determine the particulate distribution from 10 to 700 nm, up to 5 times per second. Results will be presented both on NEDC and FTP test cycles. Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAH) emissions have been also assessed.
