"Is the Sky-tower stable?";
Talk: ÖMG Tagung 2003, Bozen; 2003-09-22 - 2003-09-26.

English abstract:
Skytowers are old futuristic concepts of space elevation
where a space station on a geo-stationary orbit is connected
by a tether with the surface of the earth. Nowadays due to carbon
strings, sufficiently light and strong tethers should allow a
practical realization. However, the stability of the relative
equilibrium of the system is an open question. Using amended potentials we investigate the orbital stability of the straight configuration for stress-optimized tapered tethers.
