Annex B of CEN’s Unfired Pressure Vessel Standard, EN 13445-3, Direct Route for Design by Analysis, addresses failure modes directly in corresponding design checks, and avoids, therefore, stress categorisation, which is the traditional approach.
Tresca’s yield condition shall be used for the Design Check against Global Plastic Deformation (GPD-DC). If Mises’ yield condition is used, an additional factor of sqr (3/2) has be applied to the design yield strength to be conservative. In general, the calculated allowable pressures according to the GPD-DC and usage of Tresca’s yield condition are larger than the ones under usage of Mises’ yield condition with the corrected yield strength.
For simple examples, the difference of the limits using Tresca’s yield condition and Mises’ yield condition with the corrected yield strength are given: For closed cylindrical shells under internal pressure both limits are equal, for the one dimensional stress case and for the spherical shell under internal pressure the difference is 15.5%. In the case of the examples which were analysed by FE analysis, using both constitutive laws, the differences in the limits are between 3 and 12%.
