Mercado_53-19
Design of Sales stands for Mobile Vendors in Bogotá

The idea of the sketch design Mercado_53-19 picks out as a central theme the role of public space and its use as a workplace at a specific site, the centrally located Chapinero district in the Colombian capital of Bogota. The discussion on the role of informal vendors (vendedores ambulantes), a fierce and controversial debate now ongoing for many years, has in fact been the starting point for launching our project.

The project´s main objective consisted in developing a concept offering market facilities for 25 vendedores ambulantes on the site Calle 53#19. In doing so, aspects like design quality, economy, use efficiency, flexibility and material optimization should accompany the design process as well as recommendations given for additional uses, compatible with the retailing activities of the vendedores. The design process took place at two interrelated levels: The general site organization on the one hand and the design of the individual vending stalls on the other hand:
The project Mercado_53-19 evolved in cooperation with our local project partner in Bogotá, the Escuela Taller.

The design for project Mercado_53-19 has been worked on in 2007-8, within the frame of intensive seminars taking place at the School of Architecture RWTH Aachen, Münster School of Architecture and the Technical University Vienna in 2007-8.

Mercado_53-19
