Kurzfassung englisch:
Many railway lines in alpine regions follow the course of rivers which is often the most economic and reasonable design of railway lines. In the last years, a series of flood events caused the Austrian national railway operator ÖBB to temporarily close down several tracks. The ÖBB decided to commission a project to ¨ develop an off-line warning system with an expected lead time in the range of 2 to 4 hours. This paper presents the guidelines for setting up this warning system mainly consisting of combining existing operational forecasts for some gauges with an event-catalogue and a warning scheme for critical points between forecasting nodes.
