The necessity of interdisciplinary cooperation of engineers in the fight against the violating forces of nature became obvious in Austria, when 1998 a cave-in occurred in the mine of Lassing.
This consciousness of the necessity, unfortunately crossed our mind too late. 10 miners had to die unnecessarily.
Recalling the various catastrophes worldwide in the last decade and especially the great Hanshin Awaji earthquake in Japan (Kobe, 1995), which claimed many victims and damages, the establishment of university internal disaster oriented research centers, interdisciplinarily cooperating also with other universities and industrial research laboratories, became imperative.
The Vienna University of Technology, therefore, has established several research centers for interdisciplinary cooperation. One of them is called the "TU-Cooperation Center for Disaster Mitigation and Security in Buildings".
