Kurzfassung englisch:
The fast development of today´s technology is strongly supported by the availability of new materials with designable physical properties. Relatively little is known about cluster reinforced polymers although they open a new horizon in the preparation of inorganic-organic hybrid materials designed on a molecular scale. The used organic monomer provides control over the general characteristics of the material while the inorganic cluster is responsible for the geometry, the improved stability as well as mechanical and additional physical properties like in this case magnetism. Basic iron acetate with the general formula [Fe3O(OOCR)6(L)3]X is a good model system to study the behavior of iron cluster species in solution. Modification of the coordinating carboxylate (OOCR) allows controlling the solubility and introducing functional groups such as double bonds, while the anion (X) is responsible for the reactivity of the cluster. Furthermore, the coordinating solvent molecules (L) bear the possibility to control the stability of the cluster and render possible, by the use of bifunctional groups such as pyrazine, a wide range of controlled cluster condensation.
The different ligand modifications influence the symmetry of the different clusters and hence their magnetic properties. Therefore it is possible to tune the physical characteristics of the cluster and to consequently control its chemical properties, which is the key step in the synthesis of novel functional materials.
