English abstract:
This paper reports the eff orts undertaken by the CA-methods department of a German automotive OEM to obtain data-consistency and to establish knowledge-based engineering in the product development process of their engines. Feature technology allows manufacturing elements to carry both geometrical and technological information.
Thus such product and process features can improve machining process planning by integrating manufacturing information from the very beginning, avoiding redundant data storage and supporting the reuse of existing manufacturing knowledge. In this particular case generic bores are modelled as User-defi ned Features (UDF) in the CAD system Pro/Engineer, capable of being exported into a CAM tool.
