"The ground state of Ce3Pd20Si6";
Vortrag: International Conference on Magnetism 2009, ICM 2009, Karlsruhe, Germany; 26.07.2009 - 31.07.2009.

Kurzfassung englisch:
Ce3Pd20Si6 has recently revealed indications of a plethora of complex correlated behaviour ranging from a field induced quantum critical point to quadrupolar and antiferromagnetic order [Paschen et al. J.M.M.M. 316 (2007) 90.] Heat capacity measurements indicate a pair magnetic phase transitions at 500mK and 350 mK [Strydom et al J. Phys. Conf. Series 51 (2006) 239]. Ultrasonic measurements indicate the onset of quadrupolar order [T. Goto et al., Phys. Rev.
B 70 (2004) 184126]. Thus the magnetic state remained an uncertainty but the possibility of quadrupolar order was strengthened. We report on recent inelastic neutron scattering and polarised neutron diffraction measurements which shed light on these intricate states. The energy level scheme has been determined revealing two separate ground states for the two distinct Ce sites. In addition, neutron diffraction reveals the interplay between short range antiferro and ferromagnetic correlations. These results are discussed in terms of the heavy fermion behaviour encountered in rare earth clathrates.
