The sensitivity of academies of science to aging is especially high given lifetime membership rules and the remarkable longevity of their members. While regulating both the size and age structure of elections represents the only way to control the pace of aging in these organizations, many of them have enacted policies aimed to curb or slow down growth. This leaves the regulation of the age structure of elections as the only prescriptive policy available. In this paper, we assess the role of different age at election scenarios under heterogeneous policy regimes based on those of five European academies (Austrian, Berlin-Brandenburg, Russian, Norwegian, and Royal Society of London). We contrast projections of membership in each academy into 2050 and measure the age-compositional effect of enacting a given policy vis-à-vis a standard policy scenario, decomposing the differences brought in the age structure due to enacting different policies from those brought by mortality.
