Kurzfassung englisch:
The type of oxides formed on a steel surface during hot-rolling play a significant role with respect to the surface quality of the final product. In order to understand the formation and transition kinetics of the different oxides, it is very important to perform accurate characterization of the scale layer formed during the experiments. In the present work, the type and composition of oxides formed on the surface of high silicon (1,4wt.%) 54SiCr6 spring steel are investigated by means of optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) equipped with an EDX analyzer and laser Raman microscopy. Oxidation experiments are carried out in ambient air at 800-1250°C using a high-speed quenching dilatometer. Interfacial segregation and enrichment of Si and Cr is investigated. The accelerated oxidation kinetics above the Fayalite melting point is discussed. Experimental results are compared with computer simulations using the software package ThermoCalc. Good agreement between predicted and observed oxide types is achieved.
