English abstract:
A study correlating indentation stiffness with tissue mineralization was performed on mineralized turkey leg tendon (MTLT). Two distinct morphologies, circumferential and interstitial zones were discovered in the tissue by quantitative backscattered electron imaging (qBEI). The circumferential and interstitial zones showed different mineralization and stiffness. Indentation performed in dry and physiological conditions measured distinct mechanical properties along the axial and transverse collagen fiber orientation. A mean field homogenization model for a mineralized fibril array was employed to interpret the correlation of mineralization and stiffness in the circumferential zone of MTLT.
