nels. Therefore, large earth-coupled structures can be activated
thermally by a heat carried fluid, which circulates through the
installed absorber pipes. In the scope of the extension of the Viennese
Underground line U2 this absorber system was installed
worldwide the first time in infrastructure buildings. Design and
construction required an interdisciplinary teamwork of geotechnical
engineers and companies as well as designers for the
absorber and HVAC system. In 2008 the operation of the four
geothermal energy plants started, comprising also a monitoring
system to check and optimize the operation and the characteristics
of the system.

German abstract:
Die Massivabsorbertechnologie nutzt Erdwärme für die Beheizung
bzw.
erstmals beim U-Bahnbau eingesetzt. Die Planungs- und
Ausführungsarbeiten erforderten eine interdisziplinäre Zusammenarbeit
von Geotechnikern, Tragwerksplanern, Tiefbauunternehmen,
Absorber- und Haustechnikplanern. Seit dem Jahre
2008 läuft der Betrieb der vier Erdwärmeanlagen schließlich,
wobei deren Verhalten mittels zahlreicher Messsensoren kontinuierlich
beobachtet wird.
